lower prospect canal reserve cycleway/walkway access hours
last update - Wednesday, 21 April 2010 10:40pm

Most of the Canal Reserve - that is, from Frank Street Guildford to Hyland Road Greystanes - is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

From Monday, 21 December 2009, after being closed for 20 months, access to Prospect Reservoir was restored along the Canal Reserve.

Boral opens the section of cycleway through their construction site, from Hyland Road to the Prospect Reservoir picnic area every day November through March, between the hours of 6:00am and 6:30pm, and between the hours of 7:00am and 4:30pm, April through October. These hours are set to co-incide with the Sydney Water opening times for the Reservoir.

As construction will be continuing in the area, safe access will be provided through a controlled crossing point until the final intersection is completed. Please dismount and take care, at this point, as construction work is still continuing, and changes to the crossing point are ongoing.

Although the RTA has erected signs that indicate that the final Reservoir picnic area gate opens at 6:00am (November to March, 7:00am otherwise), please be aware that access times to Prospect Reservoir may be different. The Sydney Catchment Authority has published the following on their website:
Prospect Reservoir Picnic Area, which is owned and managed by Sydney Water, is open to the public every day of the year between 10am and 4.45pm. On weekends and public holidays during Daylight Saving Time only, the picnic area remains open until 6.45pm. Please note
  • There is no entry to any of the dams 15 minutes prior to closing time.
  • Access to some SCA areas may be restricted from time-to-time due to construction or operational activity, or for environmental reasons.
So at times it will be possible to travel through the Boral site but ultimate access into the Reservoir grounds may not be possible as the final gate is controlled by Sydney Water.

If the gates are not opened, as advertised, you can ring Sydney Water on 1800 010085 and the RTA on 131700 to complain and request that they be opened.
