cycleway gates at Boral site are open
Sunday, 7 April 2012

Boral have completed the road works at Reconciliation Road and access to Prospect Reservoir is now available without the need for a security escort through the construction site.

It is however necessary to use the pedestrian signals as the road is used by trucks gaining access to the recycling depot.

PLEASE TAKE CARE CROSSING THE NEW ROAD.

cycleway open again
Sunday, 19 September 2010

Boral have completed the cycleway works and access to Prospect Reservoir has now been restored.

temporary closure extended
Tuesday, 14 September 2010

Boral have advised us that the cycleway will remain closed until at least Saturday 18 September 2010 due to damage caused by heavy rain.

As the weather forecast indicates more rain is expected, this delay may be further extended.

When more information is to hand we will post the details here.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know who may be affected.

temporary closure from 31 august 2010
Wednesday, 18 August 2010

We have now received confirmation from Boral that the temporary closure of the cycleway, as foreshadowed in our last update below, will happen from 31 August 2010 to 14 September 2010 (re-open 15 September 2010).

These dates have been scheduled to avoid school holidays. However, the dates are subject to change should bad weather hold up the work.

Boral will update signage in the next few days to advise users of the closure of the cycleway.

This means that the Lower Prospect Canal Reserve cycleway will be closed between Hyland Road Greystanes and Prospect Reservoir, for safety reasons, while construction is carried out.
Boral have advised that the RTA have proposed the same detour as was utilised for the last closure.

CRAG compiled the map shown here for that closure although we advise that you should use this detour with care.

We do not really recommend using the detour at all for safety reasons, however, there is no real alternative while construction is underway, so some people may not have a choice.

For easier viewing click here for a larger map then click the red line to see a description of the detour route.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know who may be affected.

temporary closure to replace section of track
Monday, 24 May 2010

Boral have advised us that the section of the cycleway, east of the construction zone to where it meets the old track (uphill section) needs to be replaced due to cracking.

Following representations from CRAG, Boral have agreed to use the opportunity to widen that section from 2.5 metres to 3 metres to make it consistant with the original track.

Unfortunately, this means that it is likely that the section of the Lower Prospect Canal cycleway between Hyland Road Greystanes and Prospect Reservoir may need to be closed while this work is carried out for safety reasons.

The work could take up to 14 days and is most likely to happen in mid to late June.

When more definite plans are to hand we will post the details here.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know who may be affected.

temporary safety closure - monday 3 may 2010
Friday, 30 April 2010

Boral have advised us that:

We have been forced to close the cycleway on Monday morning for two hours (8:00am to 10:00am) for safety reasons. We will sign post the closure this afternoon. We may be able to open it earlier and will do so if practicable.

This closure affects the section of the Lower Prospect Canal cycleway between Hyland Road Greystanes and Prospect Reservoir.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know who may be affected.

access hours have changed
Saturday, 2 April 2010

Just a reminder that access hours to Prospect Reservoir have now changed until the end of October.

From 1 April 2010 until 31 October 2010 access through the Boral site will be between the hours of 7:00am and 4:30pm to coincide with the Reservoir opening hours enforced by Sydney Water.

It is a shame that Sydney Water enforces such restrictive hours during the winter months blocking those who need to commute through the Prospect Reservoir site.

canal reserve access to prospect reservoir has been restored
Tuesday, 22 December 2009

After nearly 20 long months, access to Prospect Reservoir via the Canal Reserve has finally been restored.

Unfortunately the reopening didn't go without a hitch.

On day one, Sydney Water failed to open the final gate to the Reservoir picnic area until around lunch time, even though they were supposed to provide access at 6:00am.

Day two was better, with access being provided as advertised. Let's hope Sydney Water can keep on top of this, as it is extremely frustating to ride or walk all the way to the Reservoir to find your access is blocked by a piece of chain wire.

Should you find the Sydney Water gate has not been opened as advertised ring Sydney Water on 1800 010085 and the RTA on 131700 to complain and request that they be opened.

For the latest on opening hours and news about the permanent opening please click here.

Whilst it is good to have our access restored, it must be remembered that the restoration is not as safe as the cycleway that we used to have, and it will become less safe when the Prospect Highway and Tranitway is finally opened.

CRAG intends to continue with the "Build our Bridge" campaign indefinitely, and will be looking for the support of the community in the new year as we target the campaign at the real culprits behind this debacle - the RTA.

In the meantime, CRAG would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and New Year, and take the opportunity to thank all our supporters for their assistance and donations.

Unless there are urgent issues to report, this site will not be updated until late January, so please check back then when we will ramp up for the new year of campaigning.

permanent opening
Tuesday, 15 December 2009

Beginning Monday 21 December 2009 access to Prospect Reservoir via the Canal Reserve will be permanently restored.

As the access will be across an active construction site, through a controlled crossing point, it will be necessary to obey the directions of those manning the control point. A portion of the cycleway will remain as temporary asphalt until the final concrete cycleway is constructed next year.

For the latest on opening hours and news about the permanent opening please click here.

beware of snakes
Tuesday, 15 December 2009

Both Holroyd city Council and Boral have erected snake warning signs along the Canal Reserve for good reason.

There have been many sightings of red bellied black snakes and brown snakes along the Canal Reserve and other cycleways that connect. It has obviously been a good breeding season so please take care when enjoying the reserve and if you see a snake, give it a wide berth.

yes, it happened
Sunday, 1 November 2009

After 18 long months the Canal Reserve cycleway gates were finally opened yesterday restoring temporary access to Prospect Reservoir.

For those who couldn't make it this weekend here is a photo of the open gates, just to prove it really did happen - we know a lot of people were skeptical.

temporary opening update
Thursday, 29 October 2009

Members of CRAG met with Boral yesterday and were given a tour of the temporary cycleway works.

Although there is still some work to be completed, everything is on schedule for the opening this weekend.

The following photo shows a section of the temporary cycleway ready for asphalt to be laid today.

Just to remind you the opening hours will be:

Saturdays 2:00pm to 7:00pm
Sundays 7:00am to 7:00pm

Lets hope for nice weather so we can all enjoy our partially restored access.

As for a more permanent opening, Boral advises that they are aiming to have the cycleway opened 7 days a week in time for the Christmas school holidays.
